sales@ics-spares.co.ukVery worn steering box with 3 to 4 inches of play present
Most Series One steering boxes come to ICS with a variety of issues from leaking, too much play and dangerous, to stiff or seized (normally during a restoration) and / or with various cracks and damage to the casing, collar or where the differing alloys have caused corrosion. For this particular remanufacture, ICS completely stripped the box, including the bearings in the top collar and installed a new hardened steel worm and nut. The top bearing, a part of the cause of the play was ground and freed up.
The below comments and vehicle pics have been taken from one of our Customers notes/comments:-
Steering box issues: Very worn steering box with 3 to 4 inches of play present at wheel when vehicle was stationary. On road driving required constant steering corrections to continue in straight line especially when driving along bumpy roads.
After steering box received back from ICS: Steering is now very positive on the road meaning that the vehicle is now a pleasure to drive long distances without need for constant steering correction.
Comments about ICS: Excellent and professional services from the initial point of contact through to the boxes return within less than a week. I would class the condition of rebuild and attention to detail as A1. A great pleasure to due service with. I have already highly recommended ICS’s services to fellow members of our club and shall continue to do so.
Additional steering commentary: The steering box on a Land Rover is only a part of the overall steering set up. It is as important to check that all steering linkages / swivel hubs are functioning properly and as close the manufacturers specifications as possible.
